A data leak identified by a Dutch expert revealed China tracking more than 2.5 million people in Xinjiang.

The database has been kept exposed for months by Shenzhen-based facial-recognition technology company SenseNets Technology Ltd. China’s police works with SenseNets in different cities.

The Chinese government has contributed into video surveillance and smartphone monitoring enhancement in Xinjiang.

The breached database could be accessed as well as the information could be altered by anyone. The compromised data included names, ID card numbers and location – about 6.7 million location data points were leaked.
