The study of user relations made it possible to establish that the employee transmitted information to her husband who had a plot with the company's competitors. After losing a number of suppliers because of the data leakage, the enterprise forwarded the internal report to the operational authorities who launched investigation.
The estimated damage was several hundred thousand US dollars. The retailer managed to reimburse more than 70% of the losses recognized by the court – the sum was exacted from the perpetrator who was fined for the incident.
Investigation which can take months, reimbursement which can offset just a certain amount of the breach costs - consequences are worse to deal with than risks are.
