SearchInform Risk Monitor Blocks Smartphone Data Copying by Classification Labels

SearchInform has extended the range of blocking controls available in its Next-Gen DLP system, Risk Monitor. The system can now prevent confidential documents from being copied to employees’ mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets. The blocking mechanism includes analysis of classification labels applied by SearchInform FileAuditor, the company’s DCAP solution for auditing and protecting file resources.

FileAuditor identifies files containing sensitive information in corporate storage and labels them according to their content. Risk Monitor then reads these labels, so if an employee attempts to copy a document classified as “For Internal Use” or “Personal Data” to a smartphone, the system will prevent the incident.

“According to our research, storage devices rank third among data leak channels, with 31% of incidents involving data transferred via flash drives, disks, and smartphones. Employees often take work documents home, increasing the risk of sensitive information being exposed. Controls for such situations should be automated so that security teams are not overloaded with manual approval processes,” said Sergio Bertoni, Leading Analyst at SearchInform.

“With the updated flexible settings, information security specialists can control this channel more effectively without slowing down business processes,” noted Bertoni.

The new blocking controls can be applied to specific employees, computers, or configured as a complete ban on connecting phones across the entire company. The system also notifies employees when data copying is blocked. This is part of a transparent monitoring approach: users can see why the action was prohibited and understand that it violates security policies. As a result, the number of accidental violations can be reduced.
