Capital One is to explain the leak to Congress
02.08.2019

Capital One is to explain how attackers procured data from more than 100 million customers.

House and Senate committees are going to unfold a serious investigation procedure.

Personal information from credit card applications of almost 106 million was accessed by hackers on 19 July. This is one of the largest recent leaks reported.

Among the details there were names, addresses, dates of birth, credit scores, transaction data, about 140,000 Social Security numbers, and 80,000 bank account numbers.

Sen. Mike Crapo is willing to draft legislation dictating new consumer data protection standards.

It is not the first time Capital One’s clients get impacted by a breach, and the head of the House Financial Services Committee, Rep. Maxine Waters demands that bank regulators be inspected on the subject of cybersecurity policies. According to the statement, the supervision of financial institutions compliance and security should be revised profoundly.

The suspected violator, a former Amazon software engineer, has been arrested. It is unknown whether the stolen data has been sold of shared yet.

Monitoring a corporate perimeter and detecting a potential risk might indicate a security problem. A solid risk management program, proper internal audit and impeccable compliance make a company more responsive and prepared to take measures.
