Cybersecurity Remains a Top Concern as Professionals Face Burnout

Cybersecurity nowadays is inextricably linked with the overall sustainability and integrity of any organization’s business processes. This was once again confirmed  by the 9th annual “State of Smart Manufacturing Report: Automotive Edition” by Rockwell, which is the largest provider of industrial automation digital transformation technologies. According to the report, cybersecurity is one of the top external obstacles for automotive manufacturers in 2024. Last year it was 9th on the list. Also, the study shows that the top internal obstacle for enterprises is attracting employees with the desired skillset, while cybersecurity is the number one skill employers seek in 2024.

The global cybersecurity landscape is permanently evolving, the number of threats increases steadily and the risks become more and more sophisticated. This leads to increase of burden on information security officers.  “Building a firewall against cybersecurity burnout” study, commissioned by the cyber performance center Hack The Box, reveals that 84% of cybersecurity and information security professionals in various sectors experience stress, fatigue, and burnout. This costs US companies $626 million and UK enterprises £130 million in lost productivity annually. 

The report emphasizes a significant gap between board-level understanding and cybersecurity team experiences regarding the current situation as well. According to 66% of business executives, the main reasons cybersecurity specialists work overtime are increased and unpredictable risks. On the other hand, 89% of cybersecurity specialists claim that the main contributors to burnout are excessive workloads, project volumes, and task completion times. Pressure to perform outside their skill set is also affecting 66%. This kind of disconnect leads to inadequate solutions. Professionals emphasize the need for a skillset-based solution. Yet, only 47% of businesses outsource upskilling platforms and providers to ensure employees receive the latest training and tools necessary for their roles.
