This week's news roundup might not be the most uplifting for those planning a trip. However, it is important to dive deeper into the recent events to ensure you are well-informed before you head to the seaside.
It seems like all the spheres were affected by the July 19th crash of Windows systems. Outages occurred almost everywhere around the globe, from tiny offices to gigantic transport hubs. Thousands of flights were delayed or cancelled, creating massive lines of frustrated travelers in airports. The reason for this worldwide chaos was a faulty component in the latest CrowdStrike Falcon update. It impacted more than 8 million Windows devices. In response, Microsoft released a custom recovery tool on July 21 to help users automate the removal of the buggy update.
While the passengers were getting late, annoyed, and trying to solve the problems that had befallen them, another unpleasant incident occurred. On July 18, 2024, Turkey’s Personal Data Protection Authority (KVKK) disclosed a data breach involving SunExpress, a private Turkish-German airline focused on international tourism.
According to the KVKK, the breach was caused on July 15th by an attacker who managed to acquire the login details of an administrator’s account on the airline's campaign management platform. This allowed him to send phishing emails through the account to a vast number of recipients. In total, 1,986,293 emails were sent to 596,659 unique addresses, affecting employees, customers, and potential clients.
